Stubborn Stain Removal Hints

Spilling something on your nice new carpet is an absolute nightmare, but never fear! Upholstery Cleaning Specialists are here! Check out these tips on stain removal for some of the more common accidents.

Gravy
Gravy is a nightmare, and if let sit you’ll never get rid of it, so cover the stain immediately with something that naturally soaks up grease, such as flour, baking soda, cornstarch, or salt. Let it sit for a while, and then after brushing it off, pour liquid laundry detergent and hot water directly onto the stain.

Ink
If the ink is still wet, pour salt onto it, dab it with a damp paper towel and then brush off the salt. Repeat until stain is gone.

Chocolate
Immediately scrape the chocolate from the carpet. Mix 1 teaspoon mild detergent, 1 teaspoon white vinegar, and 1 quart warm water. Apply the solution to the spot. Rinse well. Vacuum gently.

Soft drinks
The carbonation in soft drinks will help you clean spilled drinks quickly, but act fast because some of the dyes in the drinks can permanently damage your carpet and stain removal will be tough after that. Blot up the spilled drink. Mix 1 teaspoon mild detergent, 1 teaspoon white vinegar, and 1 quart warm water. Apply the solution to the spot. Let the carpet dry. If the spot remains, repeat the procedure. Vacuum gently.

Vomit
A tablespoon of ammonia mixed with 1 cup of water should help if it’s added immediately (but not on wool or wool-blend carpet; instead use mild detergent and water). If that doesn’t work, you can try one part chlorine bleach to five parts water, but only on solution-dyed carpets, such as polypropylene. Bleach will harm other types of carpets; check with the manufacturer if you are unsure what type of carpet you have Stain removal on carpets is always tricky because of the different materials, so make sure you know what you’re doing.
